The research topics include the development of
numerical methods for solving mixed-integer
non-linear programming (MINLP) problems (in both
conjunctive and disjunctive normal form) with
applications in process synthesis and production
planning.
Applied topics in the area of optimal production
planning that have been given a great deal of
attention during recent years are trim-loss and
scheduling problems pertaining to the paper
converting industry. Recent applications in the
area of process synthesis include the optimization
of heat recovery systems for paper machines.
With respect to the numerical methods,
the work has been focused on developing
optimization methods for solving different classes
of MINLP (mixed-integer non-linear programming)
problems. Two main algorithms have been
developed, the ECP (Extended Cutting Plane) method
and a global optimization method based on convex
and linear transformations.
